Oven-baked Cheese and Ham Sandwiches

Why would anyone post a recipe for Oven-baked Cheese and Ham Sandwiches?

Well , the answer’s pretty simple.

Because they’re baked in the oven, they have less fat, oil, calories and cholesterol than the classic pan fried and ham and cheese sandwich.  But they’re just as comforting and filling.

In Australia and the United States, where 80% of my readers are based,  there are growing numbers of people looking to lose weight.  But losing weight is hard enough, without depriving yourself of your favourite comfort food.

Which is where my Toasted Ham and Cheese Sandwiches shine like the little stars they are! 

Quick and tasty, they’re a lite version of the classic grilled cheese and ham sandwich.

Try them out served with a bowl of hot soup, or a fresh salad and you won’t look back!


Smarter cooking tip:

If you’re trying to lose weight, go easy on the butter.  1 teaspoon of butter has 35 calories/147 kilojoules.

Oven-baked Cheese and Ham Sandwich

Prep: 10mins | Cook: 10 mins | Serves 2


2 slices low fat tasty cheese
50 g shaved or thinly sliced leg ham off the bone
4 slices white or grain bread
1 tspn butter or substitute
Dijon or English mustard to taste


Preheat oven to 450°F.
Cover a baking sheet with baking paper.
Lightly butter one side of each slice of bread.
Place two slices of bread on baking sheet, buttered side down.
Spread with mustard to taste.
Place a slice of tasty cheese on each slice of bread.
Top with leg ham.
Place other piece of bread on top, butter side up .
Bake for approximately 5 minutes until bread begins to brown.
Flip sandwiches over.
Cook additional 3-4 minutes until done.
